The Ethereum co-founder compares the feature to the instantiation of crypto values in the real world.

Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, published a blog post earlier today shedding light on the “credible neutrality” of Twitter’s Community Notes. Buterin shared an analogy between the Community Notes and the instantiation of “crypto values” in the mainstream world. In response to Buterin’s words, X’s Vice President Product, Keith Coleman shared his comments, while the tech billionaire Elon Musk retweeted Coleman’s post.

Responding to the Ethereum founder’s perspectives of X’s Community Notes, Coleman shared a thread, stating that Buterin’s words have been a good “reminder” of the possibility of the Community Note’s public performance analysis. Buterin’s assertion on the open-source features of the Community Notes code and data has also been stressed by Coleman.

A good reminder that @CommunityNotes code and data is open source, making it possible to do public analyses of its performance and attributes, like this one today from @VitalikButerin 👇 https://t.co/Os2sGk12VJ pic.twitter.com/SCrVRbQbbd — Keith Coleman 🌱😀🙌 (@kcoleman) August 16, 2023

Crypto reporter Colin Wu, on his Twitter account Wu Blockchain, shared a thread incorporating Buterin’s key ideas regarding the Community Notes. The reporter also shared insights on Buterin’s narration on the convenience of the Community Notes and the open-source algorithm on which the feature works.

As per Buterin, Musk’s acquisition of Twitter and the platform’s rebranding to X, have resulted in “contentious” changes. Nonetheless, Buterin shared his positive outlook on Twitter’s novel feature, the Community Notes, which has been “impressively useful.” He added:

Community Notes are not written or curated by some centrally selected set of experts; rather, they can be written and voted on by anyone, and which notes are shown or not shown is decided entirely by an open source algorithm.

The Community Notes is a space on Twitter where the community could leave notes on any posts The notes that are rated by many as helpful would be publicized by the platform. The Ethereum founder asserted that the Community Notes could act as an educational tool, sharing information and notions on various contents including crypto. He reiterated the algorithm’s transparency, affirming the Community Notes’ capability to ensure security and preclude “centralized manipulation.”
