Compromised EigenLayer X Account Sparks Phishing Panic

The EigenLayer team confirmed the EigenLayer X account hack. Malicious tweets containing phishing links had been posted around 5:40 AM ET while the project team was locked out of the account.

The EigenLayer team immediately launched an investigation of the breach, engaging security consultants from Security Alliance and BrainChain LLC within 20 minutes. Later, closer to 11:00 AM ET, X Support managed to secure the EigenLayer X account, and full access was attempted to be regained.

Following an in-depth investigation into internal tools, devices, and logs of various activities, EigenLayer reported no signs of suspicious activities or evidence of breaches in their systems or users. The installed security measures, including passkey 2FA, delegated access controls, and additional protective measures to that effect, also showed no signs of compromise.

As the EigenLayer X account restoration went on, the team assured users that updates would be availed as more information was available.

Unauthorized Token Sales Linked to Previous Hack

The latest incident is the second investigation having to do with unauthorized selling activity using an Ethereum wallet address that ends with “f10D.” The wallet had transferred approximately 1.6 million EIGEN tokens, estimated to be about $5.7 million.

On October 5, EigenLayer reported that the unauthorized activity was due to a hack wherein a malicious actor managed to compromise an email thread concerning an investor’s transfer of tokens to custody.

Despite the incident of the token theft, EigenLayer had cushioned its community by assuring it that it was an isolated incident and that it did not affect the greater ecosystem. It continues to work on the security of its platform to prevent similar situations in the future.
