Polygon CEO: “OP Stack Chains Will Be Connecting to the Agglayer”

Polygon Labs CEO Marc Boiron has argued that OP Stack chains will plug into the AggLayer.

The statement comes in response to debates over the fragmentation of Layer 2 interoperability solutions.

While Boiron did not specify which OP Stack chains will connect to the AggLayer, at least one has alluded to considering doing so.

With more Layer 2 chains springing up every other day, interoperability has become a significant user experience and innovation hurdle, leading Ethereum scaling solution providers to unravel interoperability roadmaps in recent months. While the interoperability solutions proposed by these solution providers typically only support projects building with their tech stack, Polygon Labs, the developers of the eponymous Ethereum scaling network, have opted for a different approach.

Polygon has set its sights on allowing any chain, regardless of its tech stack, consensus mechanism, or virtual machine, to connect to the AggLayer, the interoperability solution at the heart of its aggregated chain architecture. Polygon Labs CEO Marc Boiron has recently reiterated this focus.

Polygon’s Boiron Tips OP Stack Chains To Join AggLayer

Polygon Labs CEO Marc Boiron has argued that chains built with the OP Stack created by competing Ethereum Layer 2 solution provider Optimism Labs will plug into the AggLayer. The Polygon Labs chief expressed this view in response to debates over the fragmentation of Layer 2 interoperability by tech stack on Monday, August 19. Sponsored

Boiron stressed that the AggLayer was not for Polygon chains alone. “It’s for the whole ecosystem,” he asserted, citing Movement Labs’ recent decision to connect MoveVM Layer 2 chains to the AggLayer. When asked if any OP Layer 2 chains would join the AggLayer, he responded:

"OP Stack Chains Will Be Connecting to the Agglayer, which will show that Superchain chains can connect as well," adding, "The only reason any Superchain chains would not connect to the AggLayer is for competitive reasons, not technical ones. But there is no good competitive reason because the AggLayer is built in a way that is compatible with the vision of the Superchain."

While Boiron did not specify the Optimistic rollups that would be joining the AggLayer, at least one has alluded to considering doing so in the future.

Celo To Join the AggLayer?

After months of consideration, in April 2024, mobile-focused Layer 1 blockchain Celo disclosed that it had chosen Optimism’s OP Stack for its Layer 2 transition over Polygon’s CDK and Matter Labs’ ZK Stack. Still, Celo suggested that it desired interoperability with other tech stacks, highlighting that this could be possible by incorporating Polygon’s Type 1 prover, which any chain can leverage with minimal code modifications to plug into the AggLayer. Projects currently plugged into the AggLayer include Polygon zkEVM, OKX’s X Layer, and Astar zkEVM.

On the Flipside

It remains to be seen if and when Optimistic rollups will join the AggLayer.

Developers are still working on several aspects of the AggLayer.

Why This Matters

Greater interoperability among Ethereum Layer 2 chains has been tipped to offer a smoother user experience by allowing users to hop across applications and execute transactions without worrying about the chain they are on. The AggLayer is positioning itself to play a significant role in this future, which could offer Polygon a big boost.
