A consortium of investors are on the brink of finalizing an acquisition of CoinDesk, a media firm with a focus on cryptocurrency.

The investor syndicate is spearheaded by Matthew Roszak from Tally Capital, a private equity firm with a keen interest in crypto and Web3 technologies, and Peter Vessenes from Capital6, a venture capital firm and family office, The Wall Street Journal reported, quoting sources close to the situation.

The deal is projected to value the company at approximately $125 million.

The news follows reporting that Coindesk's parent, Digital Currency Group (DCG), was selling stakes in some of its investment funds at a steep discount to raise capital, as it tries to pay back creditors of its bankrupt lending unit Genesis.

CNBC reported in January that Coindesk had hired Lazard to evaluate opportunities including a sale of the company.
